Hi guys im fairly new to chickens my brother gave me 4 chickens last fathers day because i was real bummed out about my house fire (upgraded life i now sit on 17 acres) he told me i had a pure spanish rooster a "yard rooster"(later to findout mr.rex is a Rhode island red) and 2 "toppy hens" so i just went with it with no prior knowledge of chickens or breeds of chickens, well i really enjoyed my babies but after December i had noticed they still werent laying eggs so i started googling (still no knowledge on what the 2 hens are exactly but foundout they were probably just too young now they throw me roughly about 9-10 eggs a week depending on their mood) but during the cold of winter my Spanish died...hurt me so bad as well as hurt my hens....my wife bought me 5 rhode island red hens for christmas and they were already laying...well they did lay for the first week then quit(still no eggs from them) i have had them with my rooster since i went pick them out well i have been working on my land for about 9 months(3 days til my 27th bday will mark a year i have been out here) we went to TSC recently and got 4 ducklings and 4 chicks(had 5 chicks my little girl was playing with her cat inside and it snuck into the bathroom and killed my favorite and only Brahma chick) now i have 2 black bantams and 2 other bantams that i cannot identify as well as 6 ducklings that are way apart in age as i got them at 2 different occasions now its time to take my 4 ducklings outside but the first 2 bantams have somewhat imprinted on the ducks and are now inseparable i have been reading threads and reading the advice people have been sharing so i just recently decided to make an account to ask for my own help as i slowly but surely turn my 17 acres into a self sustainable farm
Question 1.how do i succeed in separating the bantams and ducklings? both sets of ducks and chicks have been brooded together since i purchased them(one set has 4 ducklings and 2 chicks and the other set has 2 ducklings and 2 chicks) and when i do separate them all they do is release this very sad and lonely chirp that will go on for an hour(it was all i could stand before my 4 year old begged me to reunite them)
Question 2. When making a ramp for the ducks how do i make it so they can grip on their way up and at what angle do i make the ramp? And finally i know how to make a chicken and duck coop so they can coexist but what is the cheapest route to go for now til i have the funds to upgrade (Like pvc and greenhouse plastics or salvaged wood and wire mesh which I salvaged from my old ratbuisness that i unfortunately lost due to the house fire lastyear) i need to get the older set out so i can move the younger set into more suitable conditions and as fast as possible any help would be greatly appreciated...again HI FROM RAYNE LOUISIANA where as of recently its been real cold(57 degrees right now)
