Hi folks! Been a fan of BYC for a while now and figured it was time to join. We decided to get a few chickens last year and researched it here first. We didn't know anything about chickens and weren't even sure if we could keep them properly in our small yard, (Salem, Ma isn't exactly a country setting) Once we decided on the birds and the amount, 4 Buff Orpingtons, we used the site to find the answers to all of the problems new chicken owners have and it didn't let us down.
So a belated thank you for all of the help everyone on this site has been to us!

Yeah, well about those Buffs, We lost one in October to a Red tail hawk. It swooped right down onto our yard and killed her.
We lost 2 more to what we discovered to be Marek's (thanks to BYC). We felt that we couldn't leave her alone out there all winter so we picked up some RIR's. Not my first choice but they were all we could find and they were only 3 months old v.s Our Buff being about 7 months old at the time. We got 5 of them and they integrated fairly well.
