Hi from san diego! new to chickens.

Hi, I live in san diego and after hearing my dads stories about his chickens and my friends, I decided that I want some too! now they had them in san diego, but wanted to make sure they are legal here, I read a post saying last june they were? and I currently live with a 100lb german shepard and a 70 lb fat black lab which the black lab is so so with other animals. Will they be a issue with chickens? and I am still having probloms finding local hatcheries anyone know? .. I love reading your guys post about your chickens and I am learning alot and also any suggestions for a newbie rasing some from chicks?
