Hello all,
I am a new member and would like to say thanks to the sponsors and all who post on here. This is a very helpful site, as I am new to the chicken world, and now that my pullets are getting bigger and I added a roo I now have some questions of my own.

I currently have a silver lace that has just started laying (5 days ago) , I also have two Rhode island reds one is 4 months or so, same as silver lace. The other RIR is about two months I think they're all female. Then I have two of the show birds that have the fro also about two months. Last but not least I have a Silkie rooster around 2-3 months. My question is will he mate with my girls? And is it good to keep them together?

Hi Shober! Thank you! I'm all over LA/OC--North Hollywood, Culver City and Orange!

CoChicFarmer--hi! welcome! I obviously can't answer your question cause I'm a noob, but hopepfully someone will have an answer for you soon!

Hi, I am from San Diego, CA. They just revamped our chicken laws and we can now have some inside city limits!
Another teacher at my school hatched 7 eggs from the Farmer's Market chicken guy, and I offered to take 2. Brave, right?
I have very small yard so, I thought I'd start small and see how it goes.
We are vegetarian family of 3 ( my husband, 12 yr old daughter, & me). Our goal is to get fresh eggs & compost.
The chicks came home at 4 weeks old and joined my rabbit in his 2 story hutch. So far, they are sharing just fine.
The chickens roost themselves and even the rabbit goes back in at dark here.
They all 'free range' on my postage stamp yard all day.
So far our 2 australian shepherd dogs, and our cat are all friendly with the rabbit and the chickens.
At this point, the chickens are up to 8 weeks old and they are starting to follow me into the house to look around!
They crack me up, I spend a lot of my afternoons now in the yard, watching the behaviors and funny things they do.
I have no idea what I have- I have been looking intently at all the photos here to figure that out.
I have determined they seem to be female, which is great, or they would have to go in our tiny neighborhood.

So, the black chicken, Moonpie, I think is an Blk. Australorp. This is him at 4 weeks, when I brought them home. And, the brown speckled chicken, Muffin, is possibly an EE? Some of the eggs in the classroom were green & pink, so maybe she came from one of the color eggs? Unless I got really lucky and got a Swedish Flower Hen? All the pics I have seen of the EE's have the fluffy feathers around their faces like she does... so,I will assume that is what I have.
I also have a cute pic of the chicks sitting on top of my Angora Rabbit, Speck. They thought it was a great place to nest...Speck never minded.
I wish I could find the pics rt now but they are hiding on my laptop....
I love reading all the great stories and all the crazy things other people's chickens get into.
At some point, I will post the pics of our coop/hutch, and the vegetable garden I had to fence off, since they started eating all our new corn, cucumbers, and lettuce.
They love hopping up into the worm bin and eating all the roly-polies.
Any advice on what more to feed them? I got corn scratch and mash mix on the advice of the teacher who hatched them- but it seems like (besides the garden bugs etc) I should be feeding more bird food type mix??
I guess there's another board to go check!
Sincerely,
Juli

hi Juli and Bmshany4!
Good Luck with your babies--they're so cute! On the feed, I read that chicken scratch is kind alike a snack and starter feed with higher protein is good to give as an everyday meal. But it is better to ask the experts, since I am new to this too! welcome!

thanks! yes, i am trying to figure out if I need to go get just reg. bird food from the store and mix with the corn pellets- they also eat our basil plant & dig through the worm bin a lot eating bugs of all sorts ( except the worms) weird.
I want to make sure they are growing ok - they seem to get bigger everyday- and smarter. they figured out how to use the rabbit water container that hangs down and has the little ball to stop the water- they drink right out of there now and they started following us into the kitchen a few times a day to check out the house ( we have a split screen so the dogs can come and go with no flies coming in)
I am glad to be here and hope to learn a lot from the seasoned keepers here!

funny--only a few of my chicks like worms and slugs....they all go crazy for earwigs, june bugs and other hard shelled bugs. And when a moth flies into the pen, it's an event. They will give out a certain cry and then all fall silent and follow it, waiting for it to get low enough for them to make a grab for it. They can be like piranhas. I had to cut up the giant June bug female(that was gross!) but once they got a taste, they went crazy....
you are right--they get smarter each day. it's fun to track their learning
good luck in finding your answers!
