Hi from the Alpine Funny Farm

HI guys! We have been having so much fun with our flock!!! They follow us around everywhere. I went up to collect the eggs and was standing in the driveway talking to my husband, and darned if one of our hens didn't run up and try to snatch the egg out of my hand!!! Heeheehee!!! She accidently pecked me on the finger while doing so, but it didn't hurt. They run down the driveway when we pull up to the gate to open it, and then they follow us from the car to the house. Some of the hens stand at the doorway and stare in at us. (I think they are trying to determine if we have dried worms for them).
We tried to hatch some eggs, and the first batch we used a still air incubator and manually turned the eggs, but we had a couple problems cuz the cats would lay on top of the incbator and the temp knob would move so none of those eggs turned out ok. Two hatched and died within 3 hours. It was a learning process. Then we ordered a forced air incubator that had a better control knob ( the hovator) with an automatic egg turner. It worked like a charm, we used the old incubator for the last three days, when you don't rotate them and now we have the cutest babies!!!! I have grand-chickens!!! Heheheh.......They are about 3 1/2 weeks old now. My goodness time flies!!
Cocopuffs is still my fave He is such a drama queen! Every morning, I go up to the coop to let them out to range and all of the hens run out, Big Red (the Rhode Island Red) waits and watches all the hens leave and then he walks out when he sees I haven't harmed any of them, but Cocopuffs stands there and watches them leave, then he starts walking toward me, and when he is about 5 feet away he suddenly turns and runs the other way as if the devil himself was after him. He jumps in the air and screams, "Craaaaaaah! Cuckoocukoocucucuckooooooforcocopuffs!!!!!" Then He runs in circles and he gets so focused on running that he will run straight at me and at the last minute he looks up and sees me and jumps in the air, screams in the middle of his trademark phrase.... "cuckooforcocoSCRAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHcuckoocucucuforcocopuffs!" and runs in circles again. Hilarious fun!
I have one hen I like to call Mildred......She gives me the evil eye when I go in to get the eggs. For a long time she would sit on the shelf in the corner on the eggs with her tail pointed out andher face to the corner. I took to gently pulling on her tail to get her to stand so I could grab the eggs. So after a few days of that, I came in one morning to gather eggs and she was sitting the other way around with her tail in the corner and a smug look on her face. So I took the small broom and dustpan that we use to pick up the poop, and I held it under her face so she couldn't peck me (She gets hold of your skin and TWISTS it and boy does that hurt! None of the other hens do this, she is one mean, broody broad) and I waited for her to stand up and boy she got so mad at me she jumped into my face and flapped her wings and screamed at the top of her lungs....Big Red came running to see what was going on as fast as he could....He always does too....whenever that woman yells, HE JUMPS and RUNS! I think he is as scared of her as I am... come to think of it NOT ONE of her feathers are pulled out....(we know what that means, he's not hopping on HER) Yep, he is scared of her....

Well, I apologize for not answering all your comments...I really appreciate the comments and your support. I will post a pic and some vid of the little ones and the drama queen. Thanks for the wonderful welcome to this fabulous web site. I have learned so much from all of you. I won't be such a silent one anymore. Cuckoo for now!!!!
