Hi from Contes a hill top village behind Nice in the south of France. I'm a new hen keeper with 3 lovely girls who give me hours of entertainment as well as piles of poop!
Here comes a novice question:
If I give them un cooked greens should I shred them first?

Hello and welcome to BYC

It depends on the "greens". If it's cooked green beans I think so, yes, but most greens can be fed raw and the chickens will do the shredding themselves. I feed mine alfalfa and spinach and sometimes brassica, like cabbage, broccoli leaves, cauliflower leaves, kale... I just toss it in the run and they go crazy. Here's some more treats ideas:

Hi there and thanks for you help so far. Mr. Fox helped himself to two of our three birds and we replaced them with 3 young'uns. They get on well with the survivor and follow her lead in a few things BUT they don't hop up onto the perches at night, preferring to huddle on the floor near the door way. Is this something they'll grow out of? Forgive me if I'm being naive.
