Hello!
I've been checking out Backyard Chickens for a while now, and I love all your posts! I have 9 full-grown chickens that free-range in my backyard, with an old black lab, 4 cats, and a miniature goat. They all get along great, the dog and goat even sleep in the coop sometimes when it is cold. I never close up the coop, we've never had any problem with predators, I guess because of the other pets. I use sand in my coop, with DE stirred in, and then cedar shavings in the laying boxes. All the pets share a large, flat water bowl next to the back porch, and I throw sunflower seeds, chicken pellets and a little dry cat food on the ground for the chickens. The dog and goat share a bowl, and I have another bowl up high with cat food in it.

So, I would love to add a few ducks now! I plan on keeping them inside for around two months, and I am pretty clear on how to do that. Once they can stay outside, can I put them in the coop at night? Do I have to make another little house for them? Just wondering!

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! You might want to try posting in the Duck forum about them. https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/42/ducks A lot of people keep ducks and chickens together, two things to watch are that you probably only want female ducks since drakes can be a big problem with chicken hens, and ducks will really make a mess out of any water they can get into.

Gotta love sand! It is so easy to keep clean, no smells or flies, soft on the foot pads and the chickens love to scratch in it!

Great to have you aboard and enjoy BYC!
