I live in Plain City, Ut. It is about 30 minutes north of Salt Lake. I've never had any chickens before, and I really know nothing about them.

The reason I'm on this site is because about 3 months ago,I woke up in the middle of the night with the feeling that I really needed to get some chickens and a milk cow. Well, I've been working on convincing my husband of this since then, and he's really not buying into it. The cow, for now, is out of question...too expensive, but I've finally convinced him to let me get some chickens for my Christmas present. So I need to find or build a very cheap but big enough coop soon. I will probably not actually get any chicks until Feb or so, but I want to have everything ready before they come, so I'm not running around like a chicken....well, you know...once they get here.

I have a husband, 2 kids, a daughter who is 3 and a son who is 14 months. We also have 1 furball cat who thinks he is a dog, and 2 dogs - a german shorthair and a great dane.

Sounds like you are already doing things right by getting everything ready BEFORE getting your chicks! Good for you.

My first advice... buy or build a coop larger than you think you will need. Because when you get more chickens (we know you will

), you'll already have the space for them.

Welcome,

This site has EVERYTHING you need to help you get started.

Start with Coops, Get your coop built.

Figure out how many chickens will fit into your coop.

Set up your brooder.

Order your chicks online or at a local feed store... I imagine they have IFA's up there.

If you can only get a few chicks then your local feed store or My Pet Chicken will be helpful

If you can get 25 or share an order with someone, then you can use McMurray, Ideal or Welp.

You are doing something wonderful and your kids and husband will soon be "converts" to chickens!

Congratulations on that night time, personal revelation!

Chickens are not only nice to have for practical reasons, they are a lot of fun too!
