Hi all from VA. I have never tended a flock but my sister started to a little over a year ago and got me interested. Since i have great interest in anything to do with homesteading this just came natural I guess. I built my first coop/tractor about two weeks ago with ideas i mainly got from this site and a few i thought of myself... not claiming originality or anything. :) My sister supplied me with my first rooster and three Buff Orp hens. The coop/tractor isnt anything special but they must have liked it because they gave me eggs the first day. Im raising a few Barred Rock straight run in an adjoining coop until they are a bit older. I included a few pics... Hope to learn much more from you all.

The whole thing is 16ft long by 8ft wide and about 7ft tall.

I decided to put the nesting boxes inside to conserve material and weight... i did want to put them outside initially.

Thanks for looking,

Alex :)

Hello and :welcome
Looks like a fantastic coop, you must be very proud of it! Congrats on your eggs, have you tried any to eat yet? Fresh chook eggs are fantastic. :D Anyway, don't hesitate to ak any questions you might have, and enjoy the site!

Thanks! And yes ive eaten plenty of them already! Im still trying to figure out when to introduce the 5 weekers to the older hens and rooster . Ive read everything from "wait until they are the same size as the hens" to " 2 months old" to "anytime, just give them a place to escape to"... what are your opinions? It also seems I get an 1 egg steady a day from 2 of the hens but have about a 3 day break in between eggs from the third hen... She looks healthy... not sure whats going on.

Alex
