Good afternoon folks! My name is Colette and I am totally new to raising chickens (or buzzards as they are called in Texas)! I am learning about what breeds produce what (either for meat and eggs or both), how to build a coop for em, what do they like to eat, how to winter em...ya get my drift. Prayfully, this time next year my son and I will be living out in either Buckley or Enumclaw, loving the country and raising some chickens! I look forward to reading you guys posts, and suggestions.

Hello Collete. Welcome to BYC! There is tons of info here and very good people to help you on your journey as a new chicken owner. :)

If you want to get the most out of BYC, I suggest you do the following:
  • For general education, spend some time browsing the Articles link above and possibly the Learning Center. You will find excellent information for both newbies and long-time chicken owners there.
  • When you have specific questions, most of the time a quick search will come up with the answers.
  • If you don't find anything useful that way, post your question in an appropriate sub-forum. People here are very helpful and will answer your question even if it has been asked 100 times before.
Good on you for researching before bringing home your chickens. They should be better off for your efforts.

Enjoy your time here.

Hello:frow
Welcome to BYC!!
So glad to have you here!!
Thanks for sharing your story!!
There are many people on here that are ready to help in anyway they can!
The learning center also has alot of great information on it as well!
Enjoy!

Thanks guys for your warm wishes ;-)))) I have some ideas for using a small storage shipping container for da "girls" new home (anti-predator, nasty weather, and easy to clean). Slap a solar system on it and that's all she wrote...also collect my rainwater cause da girls gotta drink!

Does that area of Washington have enough sunny days to make a solar system feasible? You may want to check out the coops section to see how others have fashioned desirable coops from materials at hand. Also the predator threads for solid advice for safely protecting your flock.

Joining your state thread would be a boon for you to hear what breeds do best, how to build to handle the climate, etc. Good luck to you.

People ask me this question about WA not having enough sunlight, but all ya need is between 25 and 40% and we surely get more than that ;-) And a shipping container is bear proof! I'm researching now some breeds that fair well in cooler climates, are people friendly, egg-producing machines, and are pretty quiet.
