I teach in the Sustainable Agriculture program at Western Piedmont Community College in Morganton, NC. We are one of only three community colleges in the state with Sustainable Agriculture and the only one that offers Animal Science. Our campus farm is currently home to a certified breeding flock of Partridge Chanteclers, an endangered breed from Canada. We also have Shetland sheep, Nubian goats, angora rabbits and 51 Chantecler cross roosters awaiting processing.
We are members of the Sustainable Poultry Network (www.sustainablepoultrynetwork.com) organized through the International Center for Poultry (www.centerforpoultry.com). The college will host the 2013 American School for Sustainable Poultry Husbandry, a week long educational workshop to promote and protect standard bred heritage poultry for marketing, sustainable farming, exhibition and preservation. The school is open to the public and content and registration information can be found on the Sustainable Poultry Network Website.
Our first biddies hatched by a momma were born this week and are doing well. We are also in the process of acquiring incubation equipment to hatch some eggs ourselves. While we have been successful chicken stewards thus far, we know there is a lot to learn and are looking forward to the huge knowledge base provided by the BYC members. If you are ever in WNC and would like to tour the WPCC farm, drop me a line!
