My husband and I will be getting 10 new chicks next week. We are busy getting things ready for the babies, and starting to build our chicken coop. We are talking about letting them free range, but are wary. We live out in the country with coyotes, foxes, raccoons and hawks. Is this wise? Very happy to have found this site. Thanks for any help you give.

Welcome! I live in northeast Michigan with all those predators, plus bears, weasels and cougars! eek!

We have 2 flocks, a breeding cochin flock and the "layers" the layers free range if we are home but locked up if we are gone. Many people let chickens free range for a few hours in the evening, best of both worlds.

Good luck and congrats!

Hi and welcome to BYC from northern Michigan :D

I let mine out only when I am home. It takes too long to raise replacement birds to loose them just for the sale of free ranging them all the time.

Be sure to check out the michigan thread, chickenstock is coming :)
