Hi, I am joining as my first chicks, now 3 weeks old are peeping away in the basement! I have 3 each of australorps, gold star, silver laced Wyandotte, barred Plymouth rock, and Easter eggers. I live in SE Wisconsin, so it isn't warm enough to move them outside yet, but they are growing so fast I think I can see it happen. Thanks for having such a great site!

They are going to outgrow your brooder fast, and start flying out of the brooder soon. Time to put a wire cover over the top. If they fly or fall out, they won't be able to find their way back and can get chilled or eaten (house pets ?????) Glad you joined the BYC flock

Thanks, that picture was when they first came home, about 3 days old. I just had the lid off for pictures, we have 2 VERY interested house cats! It did become clear they couldn't stay in that bin long, I don't know if we even got 2 weeks out of it! They are now in a big U-Haul clothes hanging box set on its side. I think it is about 2' x 5' covered with a screen weighted down with 2x4's. It also has a wire window cut in the side. We are cutting it close, even with the upgrade. I hope the weather gets warm enough to partition off part of their big girl coop with the lamps before they outgrow this current brooder! They are definitely flying, and loving the little perches we have in there for them! The gold stars are especially adventurous and try any chance they get to fly out while I'm changing food and water. I would hate to see any of them make it out, our basement is not the warmest place to be! Thanks for the welcome

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome! The Chicks are growing so fast it's so much fun watching them explore the world. We have had to move the girls out to the coop, but have blocked off a part of it for them and they have 2 250 watt heat lamps to snuggle under. Draft free and enough room for them to do more exploring. They are about 5 weeks old at this point, and everyone looks very healthy and happy so far! Our coop is part of a large shed, so a walk in style with lots of windows for natural light, but we've been keeping some lights on for them at night until they get used to the new digs. They are wandering around and not all piling up so I think they are warm enough. We are Fermented feeding chick starter/grower using the one bucket, back slopping technique I found from the thread here. I'm afraid I may not give them enough so I'm also keeping some dry crumble out too. They seem to like having both. Anyway, just wanted to say our family is having a lot of fun with these guys and I'm so grateful for all the good information on this site, so thanks!
