We just bought our first coop! Six months old, sold by someone who gave in to chicken math and needed more room :D Of course, we want to make sure it's safe and sound before we move in our eight week olds!

There's kind of a lot going on in these pictures, just as a warning for your eyes :) -- we're moving houses in a couple weeks, so it was delivered and plunked down right between our house and carport. We plan to move it onto a grassy area near our new house, so the run won't be on concrete as it is now and the entire structure will stand alone, not against another building. We still need to clean out all the old shavings, feathers, give it a good wipe down, and get rid of the lovely red delivery tape before the babies go in, too.

Based on what I've read here since I joined, we plan to surround it with a hardware cloth skirt, replace the wooden door latches with something we can attach a padlock to, and reinforce the fencing with hardware cloth. I see daylight when I look inside the coop in a couple places and wonder if I should reinforce those with hardware cloth.

Other than that, I'm not sure if I need a latch on the nesting box, which simply lifts up, and whether anything obvious stand out to all of you who know more than me.

Thanks in advance!

Thank you for the helpful tips! I bought latches for the nesting box and both doors. There's actually a 1 inch gap along the front of the coop between the wall and the roof, so hopefully that should be good for ventilation. I think I will cover it and the couple gaps I found elsewhere with hardware cloth :)
