Welcome to BYC! I too am a new member as of 10min ago. This is my very first post.
I started my flock about 9 months ago and every thing I had planned has morphed various times due to circumstances I could have only known about by just going on with it! Planning is key but useless without flexibility. A strong mind set on a specific way usually turns into weakness and you reaching out for advice shows you are not falling prey to such.
Are you planning to ever expand your original flock? How many to start? Climate? Certain breed (requirements=heat/cold tolerance)? Daily free range or totally couped?
I went mostly temporary so as to be able to adjust as I discovered different aspects of my particular situation.
Attached to barn but possibly using a construction technique utilizing 3 walls individually constructed so as to easily be separated and re-assembled with possibly a 4th wall in case barn attached doesn't quite work out?
These are the things that I pondered going in to it and couldn't decide so one day I just went out and bought my first chicks (35) then I didn't have an excuse to drag my feet wondering about stuff that was gonna take time and personal experience in my particular situation to get my answers.
Best of luck on your adventure and be ready for the ups and downs. The biggest up for me=my chickens never judge me and took me into their flock. The biggest down=I miss Jug, my special needs Roo that made me hold him the entire time I was out with them.
Chickens, If your wounded they will find the wound, if your hurting they will feel your pain, if your sad they will taste your tears and if you need understanding they always do! Chickens Oh Chickens.
