Hi I’m CC and I’m here for duck advice!

my family adopted two Pekin ducklings in March of this year. We aren’t farm owners but we have a pretty big back yard and they have become our pets. We love them so much I had no idea the joy they would bring us! Unfortunately Tinsey- our wild goofball- was attacked by a predator and didn’t survive. That’s leaves us with Prim who is now alone . I joined so I could ask advice on how to move forward in giving her a companion and get great duck advice from all you great bird owners!

My husband is outside right now putting together a new home. I think even after that’s up I’m still going to have her sleeping in her bed that we’ve brought into the garage. I’m so worried knowing that this predator surely knows she’s here.

Do you know what kind of a predator? Don't forget that they can be struck from above too. I learned that the hardest of way. We've got a 4' fence all around the run with netting above.

I don’t know what kind it all was happening so fast. Our other duck came to get me and I found Tinsey bleeding. She died in my arms. I should have inspected her wounds better but I’ll be honest I was such a wreck I couldn’t.

Right now My husband is putting up a 5x10x6 covered chain link dog run. We’re planning to run chicken wire around the bottom. I’m also thinking for any digging predators I’m going to line the floor with heavy pavers. Might make switching out the bedding easier too. Thoughts?

Heavy pavers may stop rodents, but not larger diggers. I would consider adding an apron to the run, it can either be one that lays flat on the ground around the perimeter, or you can dig down from the fence.
