I decided to raise chickens last spring. I’ve been interested in doing this for years but have been involved in rescue for odd creatures that get dumped at our local pound such as rabbits, hampsters, peacocks, etc. The hamster nighmare was the end of my taking on unwanted oddballs and finding them homes! I ended up with over 80 (we stopped counting at 80 but there was many many more) little fur balls packed in two cheap Walmart totes. They were basically eating each other alive. My husband and I made small square areas for each hamster and spent a bit of money on a lot more totes. I went to yard sales looking for anything suitable to put these little guys in. That was several years ago now. I’ve slowly found homes for the menagerie of unwanted creatures. My wonderful husband who is not particularly a ‘pet’ person agreed I could finally get my chickens but wh n I ordered them they were shipped 15 at a time. We went coop shopping. Most held like 3 chickens! The Amish had larger coops for up to 10. Those were like $2000 & up. We could build a huge coop ourselves that would hold many more chickens for that much dough. So, he built me a coop. Our project last spring was to finish the coop before the baby chicks I ordered grew big enough to need it. Now I have a beautiful coop and 19 various grown up chickens and 1 rooster.
