(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? I don’t have any chickens yet. I’m getting all the supplies ready for them first.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now? 0

(3) What breeds do you have? I don’t have any right now, but thinking about Rhode Island Reds or Plymouth Rocks.

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens? Having fresh eggs.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies? Cross stitching, watching my grand babies.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share. I have 3 grown children all men. I have 2 grandchildren, girl and boy. I have a small 16 year old Yorkie and a 10 year old border collie.

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? I found this website by searching and reading about raising backyard chickens on the internet. I just learned about this site. I thought it would help me learn more.

Welcome to BYC, Rachel. I love all my roosters, but since you are just starting out, I'd advise waiting. You may end up with an accidental rooster though. It happens about 20% of the time.
It doesn't matter if your rooster is the same breed unless you care. It is often easier to sell pure breed chicks though if you intend to do so.

Thank you. I was going to start small. Should I have a rooster too? Does it matter if the rooster isn’t the same breed?

If you want fertile eggs for chicks, you'll need a rooster. But if eggs for eating are your main focus, you don't. Some prefer to wait to get more experience raising chickens before they add a rooster.

From experience I believe it is better to wait 3-4 months before getting a rooster chick to raise. When he is old enough to be hormonal the older hens will keep him inline.

Thank you. You’ve helped me figure it out more.
