Hi I’m Rachel and new to raising chickens.

Welcome to BYC, Rachel. I love all my roosters, but since you are just starting out, I'd advise waiting. You may end up with an accidental rooster though. It happens about 20% of the time.
It doesn't matter if your rooster is the same breed unless you care. It is often easier to sell pure breed chicks though if you intend to do so.
Thank you for your help. I think I will wait on getting the rooster. And will probably stay in the same breed as the one I start with.

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow

My experience with Barred Rocks and Rhode Island Reds is the Barred Rocks are less aggressive with each other, more friendly in general. A bit less prone to health issues too. However Rhode Island Reds are a nice breed too.

Best wishes with this new adventure!

Hello Rachel, and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
I'd wait until a hen goes broody then set her up in a maternity ward within the coop where the flock can still see her and give her fertile eggs to hatch. Then keep the best cockerel from the hatch. The older girls and his mother will teach him manners and this whole process will help him understand you are not a threat and minimize the chance of him developing human aggression when he reaches sexual maturity.
