Did you say you had a 250 watt? Those are huge to use in small brooders. You will need to raise it up each week to adjust your heat down. I like to use 75's or 100's for brooders. 250's are good for hospital cages when you have sick adult birds.

Keep us posted!

There in a area the size of a rabbit hutch there are 7 babies ... I had them inside in a plastic tote and had a 75 watt household bulb on them and they hated it ... Didn't sleep at all and chirped to the top of there lungs ... So I took away the light put in a heating pad .. Put it on medium put a heavy towel on top of the pad and they curled up on it and went to sleep ... I also covered the tote with a blanket to keep in the heat... Unfortunately my heating pad was one that cuts its self off every 2 hours so I was up every 2 hours turning it back on... So decided to move them out to the garage in their hutch that my friend let me borrow .. Has chicken wire all around it with a tray that slides out for easy cleaning... She made it for her baby chicks ... I have the light on one end so that they can get away from the light if they get too hot ... And I check on them numerous times during the day so to make sure the temps are right.. I will take a picture when I go out in a little bit and send it .. :) ..

It is possible the drafts that are coming in from the sides are chilling this baby. Brooders need to have 4 solid walls and a solid floor and an open top or areas along the top for heat and oxygen exchange. What happens with an open side brooder is the heat from the lamp draws in cool air at the sides creating a draft. This kills baby chicks. Older chicks can tolerate some drafts but very young babies cannot. Even if the temp directly under the lamp is correct, you will have drafts blowing in all around the chicks. So you might cover the sides with cardboard or something. At least a foot and a half or two feet high on either side. This will stop any drafts from bothering the chicks.

I have taken some pictures of the hutch.... I keep a blanket over it as well all but the side that the heat lamp is on..this is a picture of the hutch and the lamp ... The little one that was not as lively is now chirping away and drinking water .. We were scared there wasn't enough air ventilation lol...

So glad you joined us! The other members have given you good advice. Good luck to you!

Hope the little one continues to do well- I always lose my heart to tiny ones. Is it possible some fumes from the hornet spraying could have come their way?

We sprayed on the outside with all the doors shut and windows ... The little one is doing lots better this evening.. Drinking eating and very little sneezing .. I gave them some warm egg and all of the babies enjoyed it ..

... It's 90 degrees in their area and when I checked in them about a hour ago they weren't huddled up like they were cold ... Just wondered why I was there bothering them... Lol
