Hi I am from Arizona and I am a first time Back Yard Chicken Owner I currently have 4 chickens 2 have just started Laying as of last friday they are a Rhode Island Red and I believe I was told the white one with slightly black speckles is a Delaware. my smaller two should be laying in four months or so and they are an Americana and another Rhode Island Red I was wondering why my Delaware isnt laying yet I got her at the same time as my Rhode island Red but I am currently only getting brown eggs I was expecting the white to lay white eggs and the Brown to lay the brown eggs, havent found any white eggs ?? I also got a light brown soft shelled egg today and I heard people tell me not to rinse the eggs until I am ready to eat them because of a protective bacteria coating they produce on the eggs ? If any one has any info please feel free to let me know thanks ")

! Pleased you joined us! Yes, you should be getting brown eggs from both the RIR and the Delaware. Chicken color and egg color are not related. The Americana (maybe actually an Easter Egger) will lay a tan or blue or green tinted egg. So, hope you weren't counting on white eggs! The soft-shelled egg may just be the chicken "getting her act together" about laying. And once in awhile sometimes you get a softer shelled egg. Make sure your birds have oyster shell for calcium to harden up those shells. Regarding washing the eggs - some on BYC do, others don't. If the egg is soiled I do - otherwise I don't. Good luck to and have fun with your flock! Also, visit this thread for more egg laying info!

thank you so much for your information I always was told my white one will lay white but I am kind of happy now that you said that it will lay brown ......:) thats what I wanted to begin with ................Now I am just trying to determine which one is laying what egg lol! I was hoping for two a day but it seems like i am still averaging one egg a day or every other day , thanks for the oyster shell tip is that something I can order on line? excited as can be that my hens are laying and now we can enjoy fresh eggs!

I don't think the color of the bird indicates what color the egg will be. There are thousands of solid black chickens but, no one has ever had a black egg (unless rotten) I think where bird color and egg are the same is just lucky coincidence
