I lived outside Louisville, KY for 7 years. You did not say your location but, I know the winters there can be harsh.
Therefore, it would be best to get some hardy breeds that can take the wind, sleet, rain and snow and the hot humid summers.
Make sure your coop has at the minimum of 5 sq ft per chicken because on those bitter cold days and nights, they may not want to go outside. When you have less sq ft per bird, you can have some real pecking and bulling going on and depending on the breeds you get, it won't be pretty.
Also make sure your run is covered and protected from predators and the cold wind.
Many people on here (BYC) live in cold areas and will be able to help you plan your coop and run for the cold. Plus, they will be able to give you great advice on hearty breeds that can survive the weather. GOOD LUCK and WELCOME to BYC!
