hi i am new :)

The family probably eats 1-2 dozen a week, I think a gentle breed because of the children. The weather in Tn is very little snow, not terribly cold there.
Thank you for the quick reply

@Wyandottes7 gave you some great links. I agree you should check them out.

Welcome to BYC, you may want to go to "where am I, where are you," in the social forum to locate and post on your state thread. People in your area can let you know what breeds do best there. You may even find local people who would have birds to sell you when you are ready, so you can buy from a breeder , rather than a hatchery.

No, I don't have any breed preference. I just wanted to get a few chickens, just for the eggs to feed a family of 6. How many chickens do you think I will need? What would be the best breed for someone who knows very little? I have 6 months to learn!

Thank you for the warm welcome :)

For sheer egg production, I would recommend Black Sex Links (Black Stars). They are readily available, hardy, friendly, egg laying machines. I've raised them for years (along with dozens of other breeds and hybrids), they have been my best layers, consistently churning out over 300 eggs per year per hen. How many you would need depends on how many eggs your family eats per day. With Black Sex Links in their prime laying age, you can count on 6 eggs per hen per week (occasionally 7), so using this figure you should be able to figure out how many hens you will need.

Thank you, sounds like something I should try. I know my grandchildren are going to want to feed them, so friendly is very good :)
