We are a one chicken family. Our Dominique's name is Henny Penny. She blew in with a recent hurricane and decided to stay.
We knew 0 about chickens and tried to find out where she belonged to no avail. We tried to give her away but could not catch her. She lives in our very dense hedges and is content to stay there. We have grown very fond of her. She is such a cutie. We do feed her and she has just started laying eggs in the giant pile of grass and scrap pallets beside our house. Delicious!
We have now made the decision to build/buy a coup and add to our chicken family. We are not sure if she will take to being couped up with strangers (we have figured out how we will catch her now).
I would love to get educated suggestions on whether to start with biddies or pullets? We are in Fayetteville NC. Thank you

pullets. one rooster to at least 6 girls, if you want one. Sussex would do well with Dominques. Sussex are docile and curious. if you want chicks and want them to be good winter layers, pick, March hatched chicks.
best,

Thank you 3 rivers. I will look into Sussex . We want to start small. Maybe adding 2 or 3 to start. May I ask why you suggest biddies?
