about 2 months ago I bought 10 chickens from a lady in cleveland , three -year old americanas two- 6 month old buff orpingtons two- two month old orpingtons and three- two month old barred plymoth rocks , they all seem healthy to me at the time , because i didnt know anything about chickens when I ask she said they where all already wormed and they where all certified and ready to go so i was glade to here that. One of the baby orpingtons was a sickly lil sweet thing so from the start I wasnt sure she would make it and I was right about 4 weeks ago she died but i figured she just had something from birth wrong with her . then my big orpingtons got cold symptoms so i gave then chicken vitamens and electrolights and they recoverd well then 2 days ago my big baby rock was fine the day before and then she had conjestion so bad i could hear the rails when she breathed so i called a local vet that told me not to bring her there but to call a different vet so... i called the vet suggested by the other vet and they said well we dont see many chickens but i'm sure we can do something . so i take her there hopefull to find out what is bothering my chickens "I also said on the phone when I called this vet that I wanted to test her to see what she had they said sure" so i get there and go back the doc comes in sees the chicken and kid you not looks terrified ? goes back out and I hear them talking chicken he comes back in and circles the chicken in a cage on the table then listens to her breath tells me she has conggestion ... yeah.. and then says she feel skinny so i feel her and she does but i just thought maybe young chickens did. he eyes me for a sec gives her antibiotics and a wormer and send me home with 7 more days of this injectable antibiotic and tells me to see if my other chickens are skinny too so i do and They are? and then two other start breathing raspy so i am giveing them all a treatment of tetracycline antibiotics "14 day treatment with a withdrawl of 21 days" ,but the skinniness what is up she said she wormed em but it just dont seem like it ,so i went looking for a broad spectrum wormmer found on here valbazen so i ordered some because the feed stores don carry any thing they should they do have wazine though but it only covers large round worms so i figured if i do it i might as well get rid of all the parisites , now that being said i dont see any in their poo but they eat like horses and are skinny. worms is the only thing i could think of and yesterday my big orpington was laying around and wouldnt eat so i sepperated her ,checked her crop ,it felt empty i felt her belly i didnt feel anything hard like a bound egg she was breathing like she was hot but no congestion so i wet my hands and pet her a lil to cool her off and then she ate two june bugs and ten mealworms drank some water and seem to be doing better but today she was dead .so i am wondering now if i should go ahead and worm them with wazine monday while i am waiting for the valbazen to come in sorry for the long story but i find it easier to figure things out when have a better back story

You might consider having your chickens tested for Coryza and MG (Mycoplasma gallisepticum), chronic contagious respiratory infections that passes from one chicken to another. Ther vet should be able to test for this. There are other causes of respiratory infections too, but these would be espeically concerning.

Thank you for your advice ,
I ask the vet to test the sick one and they ignored me, the other vet wont even see her. I wish I could have them tested but we live in a rural area with only the two vets and the next nearest one is 43 miles and they wont see chickens ether. do you or any one know if there is a place i can send samples too have tested for low cost . or a vet near Livingston tx that knows more than me about chickens I ask the vet and he ask how many chickens i have I told him 9 and he said it wasn't worth it because sending a carcass off to test would cost me $7,500.00 O_O
i mean i am frustrated we live in farm area so why dont the vets know anything ? I have also heard/read round worm infestation can cause congestion so I am hopefull the wormer will help the young rock he gave wormer to seems to be gaining a lil weight and is very lively now more than the others so.... fingers crossed

Thanks again for all you help
