I've been lurking a while and coming here to look for information for our new flock of 11 color pack layers. They are about 5 months old and have been laying for about three weeks. We had a mixed breed flock about a decade ago. The coop had been empty for quite a while until my daughter (17) convinced us she needed some chicks. The girls live in an old dog run and we are still building the new much bigger run. We live on a creek so need to predator proof all chicken areas. We have bobcat, mountain lions, racoons, coatimundi, ringtails, coyote, fox, badger, skunk and various rodents plus birds of prey that are interested in the coop/run. We are in Arizona so deal with heat for the birds but not much in the way of cold. We enjoy the eggs from our girls but they are more pet than livestock. I don't think we would be comfortable eating them. It's hard to eat something with a name. The chickens have been a great diversion from the world situation. My daughter's school is still remote so she has plenty of time to care for them.

thanks for listening and we are glad to be around...

Hello Janice! Welcome to Backyard Chickens! :jumpy
I hope you find this site as useful as I have and maybe make some friends! :)
Thanks! I've been looking through the files for information since the girls were about a month old! There's great info here to help in raising a healthy flock. Thankfully the girls haven't had many problems yet. The forums have had lots of advice on setting up their new run too.
