Hi I'm Jessica

Thank you for the feed back! We are giving them some oyster shell as well a sprinkle here and there. They are in a run but a fairly large one. Also their boxes are roughly 20 inches up we converted our shed into a coop so it is completely caged in. We used hardwire instead of chicken wire. I have not found any sticky spots in the boxes but I will keep looking. Thanks again!

Oh! Their coop is in a shed, this is all starting to make sense now. What do you have for windows or lighting? Is their run indoors too? In essence, I want to know about both the amount and duration of light your hens get.

Chickens need about 16 hours of light a day to really lay well, and I feel that adding some light to your coop Could very well go a long ways toward egg production. :)

They do have a window and their run is outside but attached to the shed. They have food and water both in and out of the coop! We let them out around 7 am and they go in around dark. We live in MI so right now there is plenty of daylight. I am happy to announce we got our first egg today! Hopefully this is the start! And thank you my husband built it for me out of almost all repurposed material. We have tweaked it a little such as doors on the back of the boxes so the kids can get eggs without going in and another perch. I feel like a kid on Christmas morning today!!

Congratulations on your first egg!!! I remember how exciting that was, seems like it was forever ago though. I am guessing it is a brown egg, right?

So did you find the egg in a nestbox, or on the ground in the run or where did they decide was a good place to lay? Lol

It was in the first nesting box but when i chcked the other two it was obvious something had tried them out as well but no egg. Maybe tomorrow!!! I have seen the red in the first box a few times. The lops not so much. Maybe they will follow suit! Thank you so much for advice!

That's a beautiful egg! I think the other hens will probably settle in and start laying soon, too.
