Welcome aboard, hope we can help you along your venture. The first 2 sq ft seems ok,but the next 2 I would jump them up if possible. At least double them.Ringnecks are very cannibalistic birds and require a lot of room.Temps are also a little low.Start brooding at 95 and drop 5 degrees each week for 6 weeks.Remember they are coming from an incubator that is set at 99.5 hopefully, and 7.5 degrees is a big drop in temps for them. You will lose a few along the way to even if you do everything right.I would suggest vitamins and electrolytes once a week and a gamebird crumble.Keep an eye on them as I said they are cannibals. It would be great if you could figure out a way to put a ball in there brooder and keep it moving so they would watch for it instead of their roommates.Kinda distract them from each other and I think cannibulism will be minimal(This is just my thought no proof it would work).

Thanks Tony, The temp numbers came from the chick breeder so maybe they have lower hatch temps. I'll up it some just in case and watch. Wondering what I can expect as a normal loss for 30 chicks for the first six weeks?

how about a toy wind up mouse for the birds to chase

Hello,

I am looking to raise laying hens for our family and also live in the Midland, Ontario area - Would appreciate your supplier contact information to purchase some hatchlings as well.

Thanks a bunch!!!!

Mike

Ringneck chicks are pretty hardy little burgers. With proper care you shouldn't loose any out of original 30 shipped chicks, providing they all withstand the stress of shipping ok. I purchased 50 chukar chicks 3 weeks ago, they sent 52 and I still have 52. Keep them on the electrolytes and high protein game bird or turkey starter and they should do great. Like Tony said ringnecks are very cannibalistic and the more space you can provide them the better. Also if the chicks have some loose hay to scratch in it keeps them occupied and they avoid picking on each other.

Hi Mike, I ordered from Ritchies Feeds near Elmvale 705 322 2363, They need a few weeks in advance notice and have all the equipment and feed. I got my 30 pheasants 5 days ago and all are alive and appear healthy. Growing wing feathers and even now can fly across the pen although not yet up and out. Great fun for the family.

deserhotwings... good call on the hay. Just put in the little mat that came with my chicks. fine wood threads bound with string. They immediately flocked over and picked at the mat instead of each other. No sure cannibalistic is the right word, they don't seem to want to eat each other just drive their sibling crazy by pecking anything that doesn't move. reminds me of me and my younger brother when we were little. If things were quiet I'd punch him in the arm for fun and entertainment.

I wonder how chukar survive in the Arizona heat, Was at The Boulders last Sept 1 in 106* heat but did notice lots of quail running around. The ones with the curly feather on top of their head

gbay if those little rascals ever draw blood on another you will realize why we say cannibalistic. They will show no mercy at the sight of blood. Those little blocks of scratch grain that they sell in the feed stores keep them occupied too after they get a little older. This will be my first experience with Chukars. A lot of folks down here raise them with no problem. Probably have to treat them like I do my pheasants in July and August. Once the temp hits 110 or above its cold watermelon and ice water every 3 hours during the day. The little curly top knot quail are gambels. Their all over the place here. Cute little rascals but hard to raise. Good Luck with those Ringnecks and enjoy your Canadian summer.
