Hi, I'm new here!

I have a big yellow lab, and she is curious about anything new... I live in the suberbs, and I do have enough space for a chicken coop and run(still not sure if I want a run or free-range...). Oh, I don't want any roosters, it would probably disturb the neighbors. And I wouldn't know what to do with the fertile eggs:idunno. Who do I contact to find out if I am able to raise them?

On your lab - you'll need to teach the dog not to chase the chickens - and I think free range might be a bit challenging with a lab sharing the space - we have a german shepherd and a golden retriever - and the chickens have 2 large runs, and are only allowed to free range with an escort (me). It is tough to ask a bird dog to ignore birds... it can be done - but I don't think I would trust my dogs alone with the chickens... just too much temptation.

On the local laws - there is a group on this site (go to the main index, and look for the group related to local laws and ordinances --

I would suggest contact your local city or county office - you could call animal control and they might be able to direct you to the right place -- sometimes the information is listed at city hall - and if you are lucky, it is on the web! But the other site I linked above is the best place, I think, to ask about where to find out the rules (many places care about the distance of the coop from the property line, the number of chickens - and fresh organic eggs do tend to soften even the most crabby of neighbors! *smile*). If you are in school - this is a great thing to ask your civics teacher about!

I live outside the city, but felt the rooster I had (was supposed to be a girl) was too loud - and found a good home for him. If you only get hens, they will lay eggs, but they won't hatch into baby chicks - so you might want to consider just getting hens.

Good luck!
