Hi All, I've been coming across these forums for a while before deciding to join.

It seems such a mine of information!

We kept a few hens a few years ago, a mix of ex commercial and a bluebell, Rhodes Island red and white leg bar.

Unfortunately a fix got them and I spent a good couple of years feing very guilty and didn't feel I could get more.

This year we built a large and much stronger run with roof to house hens in, though they free range the big garden when we are home.

We have 2 ex commercials - Stitch and Merida, a Copper Maran - Jasmine, a Welsummer - Crumble, an Aracuana - Lilo, a Black Rock - Rosie and a Light Sussex - Belle.

Belle got super broody late summer and we tried everything (including reading through methods here) to break the broodiness and got nowhere after 3 weeks.

Began to worry about her and so gave in and bought some hatching eggs from a local farm.

We now have 2 x French Maran, 1 x Silkie, 1 x Bantam Wynadotte and 1 x Brahma... at least thats what the eggs were labelled as.

They are all just over 8 weeks old.

We are hoping to keep the cockerels (no idea how many we have) but if they are horrid to the ladies or to us then we will do the responsible thing by them as we discussed as a family before we hatched any.

Nice to meet you all 👋

Welcome and have fun here!

Roos that grow up as brothers tend to be less aggressive towards each other, their sisters and you.
If they show signs of aggression, treat it early- grab them and handle them firmly when they are still young. This will show that you are boss!

Thank you. Fingers crossed for them. I dont doubt we've at least one maybe more in the 5 chicks so fingers crossed for them!

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
You will likely need to rehome all but one cockerel. That many boys with the number of girls you have usually leads to lots of screaming, feather pulling and some bare backs. And sometimes bloody boys.

Thank you! I dont know how many cockerels we may have at mo as we've 7 adult hens and the 5 chicks. So.. we are having to wait and see what we've got in the mix of chicks.. one cockerel would be handy but I dont think we will be that lucky!
