So im new to all of this and have a few questions ....what are the best laying breads? Have a good temperament bc I have 2kids? And at what age should I get them? Is local farmer better or a feed store? They will be mainly free range but I will still need some type of feed for them what type? And how many for a family of 4? Do I need an even number of hens? Ok so maybe I have alot of questions :)

! Pleased you joined us! There are so many great breeds from which to choose! I have my favorites as does everyone else. The White Leghorn is likely the best layer going but is often nervous and noisy around people. The sex-linked varieties (they go by many names...Red Stars, Black Stars, Cinnamon Queens. Gold Comets) are a good compromise - a great temperament but they also churn out a lot of eggs. Other more heritage breed types that also fit the bill are Buff Orps and Speckled Sussex just to name a few. Below is a chart where you can do some comparison shopping! Good luck and have fun!
