Hello~I bought my baby chicks today, they are eating and drinking and chirping away. So cute. I bought five Rhode Island Reds and five Buff Orpingtons, I have been out helping the hubby today build parts of the coop. It is way to cold here in Michigan for them to be outside so they are in a 50 gallon tote on the dinning room table with their heat lamp, food, water and grit.

Congrats on the new babies!! If you need any tips and hints on raising your new flock, you might check out our learning center here on BYC. Lots of good reads on all the aspects of raising and keeping your birds healthy and safe...

Great to have you aboard and enjoy your new babies!!

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Congratulations on your chicks! TwoCrows gave you a great link to check out!

Thank you twocrows and kelsie2290 I have been reading up for about two months now in the hope I would be a good chick mom. I do have one question, when can the chicks have treats or scraps of lettuce and such?? That I haven't been able to find

It is best to wait until they are 6 weeks old before adding treats. Babies need to eat their starter feed to grow properly. After 6 weeks, you can start to add other things to their diet. And add grit to their diet anytime you add anything other than their crumbles or pelleted feed. Here is a nice treats chart that will give you an idea what birds should and should not eat....

My birds will eat anything, and I swear if I didn't move my hand quick enough when I put a plate of goodies down, they might eat that too!!!
