I've never kept chickens before let alone hatch my own however ive got 6 silkie eggs in an incubator! Today is their 5th day in there so tonight I plan to candle them and check for signs of development. I have to confess I am both nervous and excited about all of this.

I love the idea of having chickens and having fresh eggs to collect plus I wanted to get my two children involved too and what better way than to watch them hatch (hopefully) and grow etc.

The chickens themselves will be another addition to our crazy house! Im a breeder of Malawi fish (african cichlids), we also have a crested gecko, 2 snakes, a tortoise and a dog. I love it!

So hi from me anyway!x

Welcome to BYC!

At day 5, you aren't going to see much. I normally don't candle til about day 8. By then, you will start to see veins and such. But it is up to you. :)

If you need any tips with this hatch, stop by this article in our learning center on hatching eggs. I will also include a link to some nice candling pics so you know what you are looking at...
