I have had my chicken for a year now I have a Poland call Dolly a very good egg layer and a blue bantam called Dorothy very broody rubbish at egg making but has just become a mum today .I m so chuffed .They are both very friendly often sneaking in the kitchen and my husband work shop we have found eggs all kinds of place they are so fun and keep the garden a live .I have a few questions to ask

.Hi my broody hen Dorothy has happily hatch out one egg today .I brought 4 ferlies eggs for her to hatch ,I didn’t mark them and my other chicken gave her 4 more eggs to sit on ,we couldn’t work out which were which so we have 7 eggs that she is sitting on with her one chick .How long before we can expected the other chicks if they are coming ?if they don’t come soon will she still feed this chick ?
Dose the mother feed the chick or dose she show it the food ?
I have brought chick crumps is that all they need ?
I have a chicken water tray which I have lowered so they can reach .
In a few day should the chicks be coming off the nest ?
And last of all when can I hold them my chicken is very friendly and was hand raised she a bantam hatching silky eggs .Thank you Wendy

How long before we can expected the other chicks if they are coming ? if they don’t come soon will she still feed this chick ? Yes, she will feed the chick. Eggs hatch in 21 days. If they haven't hatched in 25, they probably won't.
Dose the mother feed the chick or dose she show it the food? She shows the chick.
I have brought chick crumps is that all they need ? You need a 18-20% chick starter feed. (Crumbles.)
In a few day should the chicks be coming off the nest ? It takes about a week until the mama is ready to take her babies into the world.
And last of all when can I hold them my chicken is very friendly and was hand raised she a bantam hatching silky eggs. Right away.

Be sure to also check out our learning center. I've attached two helpful links from there for you to check out too.

Will they stay the same colour as they are when they are chicks ?

Most chicks start with a different color fuzz than what they grow up to be. So not to worry yet. LOL

However, you can ask questions in our Silkie thread. Lots of help can be found there....

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! What cute chicks! X3, chicks often start with different colored fuzz than they will have feathers.
A mother hen will call her chicks and show them food and may pick it up and drop it for them, but she will not take food back to the nest for them.
Usually she / the chicks will leave the nest during the day when the first/oldest chicks are two days old or so but they rarely go longer than three days since the chicks need to get food and if she keeps sitting on unhatched eggs the older chicks will starve. You can keep food / water really close to the nest and hope the chicks will go out to eat it and she will brood the remaining eggs for as long as possible, but usually once the hen leaves the nest she is done being broody like she would need to for the eggs to hatch.
Chick crumbles are fine for her and the chicks.
X3, you can hold them now if you want and it doesn't make mama upset enough she will leave the nest.

Dose the mother feed the chick or dose she show it the food ?
