My family and I are brand new to raising chickens. I've personal been around chickens before. But there a brand new thing for my husband and kids. We got our chickens this Tuesday. We were going to start next year but our neighbors were wanting to get rid of some of there's. So we toke four to start.
We are sketching plans for a coop right now and should be getting started in a couple of weeks. I think were leaning toward a 4'X8' coop.
We have for chickens. there about 12mths and are laying eggs. I have no idea what breed they are.
I found this site thru Pinterest. We bought our 3 acre home in October. We finally got out of town in our 2bedroom home. So we have been very busy just working on our land. But I like to do genealogy, we shot and hunt. My 7 yr old son has high functioning autism, so he keeps me busy too.
We have 2 dogs both girls. Ruby is an Australian shepherd mix and Star a German pointer mix. There not use to other animals, so that's bit of a challenge. This is what we have. Well one of them. This one is sneaky. Just look at that face!

This is a great site full of useful info and great people!
Looks like a Golden Comet to me.
What are you keeping the chickens in while you are planning/building the coop?

Welcome to BYC! The hen in your picture is a Red Sex Link hen (they are marketed under a lot of different names, including Golden Comet, as Family Farming mentioned). Red Sex Links are egg laying machines. Good luck with your flock.

Well right now we have a wooden compost bin that I just built this spring. Its about 3' high X2' wide X4'long. i put 2 girls in 2 compartments. they have been in there for going on 3 days. I read that I should leave them in what you want them to go into at night. I was thinking about letting them out tomorrow. this is the east side and the slats are facing north.

this is looking thru the east side.

Then this is the west side

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Usually people give them closer to a week, unless they are fairly tame / you can leave them out in a fenced area you can catch them in if they decide they don't want to go back in the coop.

Welcome to the flock - it will do but, hope you get moving on the coop. It's pretty small for 4 birds and if they imprint on that - then they will have to imprint again on the new one. That's a lot for chicken minds to handle. Not predator safe either.

Do you intend to add to the flock? Chickens need 4 square feet per bird in the coop and 10 sq. feet per bird in the outside run. Crowding causes tempers to flare - feather picking , fighting and more...

It's always better to go larger because chicken addiction hits hard and fast and you'll wish you had more space.
