I have 13 chickens and 2 roosters out on Long Island, NY. My son wanted chickens so him and his friend converted an old shed into a coop. At that time we had 4. My husband wanted to get involved so he made the run. My husband wanted more chickens and ordered 9 more. My son was overwhelmed with so many chickens that he let his father take over. One of our roosters is humorous and mean and my husband is afraid of him. The rooster took to my son with no problems. Still to this day my son is the only one who can go near him. Soooo my son and my husband both left the responsibility up to me. The first mistake was getting the chicks and not really knowing how to care and raise them. I went in blind and learning a few new things every day. The rooster hates me so every time I go into the run I have a shield so he doesn’t hurt me. Sometimes I go in without my boots on and with a shield and my legs are so scared up. One time he got me real bad on my foot I couldn’t walk for three days then another three with crutches. My foot blew up. Well anyway I guess I’ve said enough. That’s me in a nut shell. Thanks

Welcome, Nadine! Glad you joined. There are lots of articles here about how to handle roosters and anything else you might need. Here's a link to a page from a search about roosters. https://www.backyardchickens.com/search/30330797/?q=mean+rooster&t=ams_article&o=date
You might want to take a look at some of these articles. Chances are people here will tell you that any rooster who has scarred up your legs deserves a nice bath. In a hot pot with lots of herbs and spices! Haha. If you don't want to cook him up yourself, you might want to give him away or sell him and try again with another rooster. Not all are so ornery. I love my roosters, but I would not keep one that attacked me. Good luck!

Hi Nadine, thanks for joining us!

I'm on the side of the "no reason to keep a mean rooster" camp. Lots of nice ones available if you want to have fertile eggs.

Best of luck!

Hi Nadine! :frow
Welcome to BYC, a great community full of support and great information! I am squarely in the "in the pot he goes" camp! Might have to get used to that mindset if you want to keep a rooster for breeding purposes. Some o' those eggs will end up hatching out boys, and no sense keeping one that is unruly. If you rehome him he might do that to the other people as well, prob not something you want.
Anyhow, welcome again and I'm sure you'll love it here!:welcome
