I'm new to the world of breeding and showing Silkies, I have yet to go to a show and have an idea of what I want my birds to look like, from breeder sites and such, but I want to get an idea of how my Roo would rate if I took him to a show..

any help would be great. Personally think he is perfect, but then again i'm no expert either..LOL

thanks again Janine

We need a lot more pictures to get a better idea but from what I can tell, he doesnt look too good. He looks to have a red face, small crests, and the coloring looks off.

yeah its a bad picture.. had it from a top angle with the sun being stupid. I will take more tomorrow.. I got him as a Self Blue.. which I was told is different from Blue.. so yeah not sure..

he does have 5 toes, great feather on his legs, and has good spacing from what I can tell, he does have a hip fracture due to a hawk grabbing him one day, and i'm surprised he managed to survive the 100ft fall after struggling with the hawk, while I'm on the ground screaming for my bird.. it was horrible, so he my not be SQ because of the always limp he has, but he is a champion in my eyes..

he does have a nice crest, it is hard to see in the pic.. again i'll take more tomorrow.. try to get all the angles.. if I can.

I did order splashed silkie eggs on BidBirdAuction from CJ's Silkies.. can't wait to get them, but I also know even if the parents are SQ doesn't mean that the chicks will be, its the luck of the draw and what not.. so i'm willing to work on my lines to get to the show quality that I have seen.. which will take years..LOL

as far as shows, how do you guys find them, the fair shows here are kinda loss since I'm the only one in my whole town that now has silkies and the farmers down' judge on looks, just fat and etc.. so I want to be able to go to a show that KNOWS silkies and KNOWS what they are suppose to be confirmation, feather, you have you wise.. its hard since i'm 2hrs from the nearest city, but i'm willing to travel for the right shows.

I just haven't had any luck finding any online.. just wondering.

Okay so I looked at my boy today and yes his is very RED in the face, always thought that was normal, is there a website that explains how they are suppose to look so I can look it up..

here is a picture of my girl.. again I think she is totally imperfect.. not SQ in any means, and she is being Naturally bred by my boy so excuse her rough looking saddle and etc.. but she is black all around.. and a non-bearded girl.. from what i've been seeing online, she has a nice crest but again i'm no expert.. she is lacking some leg feathers they never really came in.. she has 5 toes.. nice spacings and etc..

anywhom in interested in hearing what you guys have to say on her.. it helped loads on my boy.. once I find a new rooster I will adopt him out as a pet.. since i'm expecting that , the red will carry on to the offspring right?

sorry for picture quality.. she is kinda a spaz and hasn't been handled much.

I think you need to take a look at some SQ Silkies. Take a look at mine (the link I posted), and also www.silkiesbygeorge.com, www.indigoegg.us, www.browneggblueegg.com, www.sunshinesilkes.com, www.pompadoursilkies.com, Brody's Broodello (forgot web address), Sonoran Silkies (forgot her website addy), for a start. There are others I didn't mention yet. There are many good show breeders out there. Look at their birds and then look at yours again. The APA Standard of Perfection is a good reference book you may want to get.

Crests on Silkies should be very puffy and cover most of their face for a SQ look. The only thing I can see on my Silkies is their beak because their crests are so big.

Yes, the red will be passed on to offspring. So will the small crests and the featherless legs.

okay cool.. thanks for letting me know that.. all the babies from the two are being sold to pet only homes, for people who want bug control, I explained that to the people way before I agreed to sell them ..that the babies ARE NOT going to be show quailty, and they will be good pets, and buggers, but thats about it..

I've checked all those sites.. but they all have Bearded Silkies so its hard to tell what a Non-Bearded silkie should look like.. also my birds are only like 10 months old..they hatched Jan of last year. so I'm not sure how long it take for them to get all puffy, I'm also thinking that the pulling of the crest feathers from breeding and such.. since again natural breeding..

i'm not going to be doing AI anytime soon.. so I'm letting nature do its thing..

I talked to George, and would love a bird from him, but I can't afford a $200 bird right now ..so i have to start with eggs and work my way up.. even though he told me not to do it that way..but I can only do what I can afford, maybe in the near future I can get a good breeding pair..but for now.. i'm limited on money and what i'm allowed to spend in buying birds and such.. thanks for all the links. I book marked them all so I can refer back to them and see about getting hatching eggs from the ones that sell them..
