Is it pasty butt that is the problem? You may want to check out an MHP (mama heating pad) thread. I've raised chicks with mama hens and mama heating pads and while I love the hens best, the MHP is second best in mho.

Gosh, I’ve posted a lot about Pasty Butt today. It’s definitely chick season, no doubt! In order to help resolve the problem, take the chick and an old toothbrush and scrub the area with lukewarm water until the poop is loose. Make sure she’s dry before placing her back in with the rest, because an exposed vent is an invitation for the others to peck.
