Hi new family!! Just a quick intro. I am the proud owner of 3 lovely ladies, Daphne, Velma and Mavis. We've had them a year now and what a year!! From stand offs at the Veg patch, (hubby v a very determined Daphne), to hopping over the fence to rescue the neighbours (lol) to the labour of love through a very cold, wet winter. We've loved it all!! My friends think I'm slightly mad when i talk about 'my girls' and their personalities! Mavis is the daring, little bit naughty one who gets Daphne into trouble, Daphne needs pearls and a handbag and Velma is that laid back its comical! Well, that's us for now, speak soon xx

Welcome to the forum. I have 6 gals - 3 BO and 3 BR. Each has a unique personality. People do think we're crazy to love chickens, but I think it strange that they don't.

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

Yes, lots of us know exactly how you feel. We talk to people about your chickens like we are talking about our children! Some of us keep more pictures in our wallets or phone of our birds than we do of our family!!! LOL

So glad you are enjoying your flock. Chickens sure are fun to own. Make yourself at home here on BYC and welcome to our flock!

Really glad to have found you all! New to chicken breed lingo but have consulted my bible' Haynes Chicken Manual. Is a BO an Orpington and a BR a Black Rock? I have a Black Rock-Mavis, a Calder - Velma and a Speckledy - Daphne. At the mo Daphne has a bald bum, i read it may ne boredom so now they have a chickenopolis in the run. They're not oo keen on he mirror idea but the extra ladders leading to roosting bars in the cherry tree which grows in the run have helped! I hang veg and fruit from the tree which keeps them busy although Daphne does get annoyed when she can't catch swinging grapes - so funny!!! Any other suggestions would be gratefully received! Ps i live in the Midlands of England, in Staffordshire just so you know:-)

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Sounds like you have a nice little flock of ladies!

Yes, BO=Buff Orpingtons. Mine are Big Buff, Penney "the pincher", and 'little" Lillie . BR= Barred Rocks, they are black and white striped. Mine are Road Runner, Tweedie, and Dottie. All but one of mine have lost fluff in their bums. Thought it was lice or mites, but thorough exams were negative. Research in BYC forums suggested boredom feather picking and others relate it to their best layers. I have seen them pull feathers, but those with naked bums are the ones who started laying youngest and lay eggs nearly every day. Big Buff still has a full fluff, but didn't start laying eggs til she was 10 months old..and they are all just 14 months old now. I hope they will regain the fluff in their first molt. They were so much more photogenic with full clothing…feathers.

My gals would be quite jealous of your chickenopolis run! We are in the process of doubling their all in one coop/run and plan to add a fenced in compost playground soon. I have to introduce changes very slowly, because they are so CHICKEN about anything new in their environment.

Again, welcome to BYC, so happy you joined us.

Hi. Bought ours at 20 week pol may day weekend last year. Started laying straight away. Chickenopolis happened very quickly as the sight of me with a saw and power tools when hubby come home prompted him into action! Lol! I have also sent an e mail round our office for pots of weeds hiding in their gardens with a good response, keepy girls busy! Xx
