Thanks for the warm welcome!
I've ordered my chicks from Ideal and are set to arrive some time late next week. I picked the assorted chick pullets, only because I could not decide on which type to get as I like so many!
I've managed to get my neighbor on board too and she's going to start out with 4 chicks of her own! She asked her landlord if she could keep chickens and he not only said yes, but said he had a free coop/run that she could have!!!
lucky...
I'm finalizing my coop plans this weekend and will start on the construction faze in another week or two. I'm still not exactly sure where to put the coop. I live on about 1.3 acres and have plenty of space. The issue is which space would work best? My options so far are:
The orchard- a space where I have 7 apple/papple/plum trees and a medium shed. This space has no fencing around it and has plenty of shade. It's close to the house and close to the neighbor's property line. (though it's just a couple acres of woods)
The back yard- a large fenced yard (Split rail with wire). This features lots of grass one huge oak tree, 6 crepe myrtles, and assorted bushes including some holly. Plenty of shade or sun options in this yard.
The back-back yard- a space where the previous owner kept horses. It has fencing for horses (wont keep anything small in or out). It has one large American Chestnut tree, one fruit tree, and a holly bush. This area does not have grass but grows something that resembles hay when cut (maybe it is hay?). This area has shade and sun options and is easily reinforced with chicken wire to allow free ranging options. The downside to this area is that it's a bit of a walk from the house, which is NBD except I do not have water out there, I'd have to run a hose or carry buckets of water for the hens.
I guess I should count myself lucky to have so many options, however I'm not certain what the best one may be (long term).
Any advice from expert chicken coop placers would be a big help!
For now I count the days down to 8 happy chicks in a box.
