Hi, I'm Kara. I'm in Utah and am just starting this chicken fun. I've wanted them for years and finally decided to jump into it. I only planned to get 3-4, but when I sent my husband too the feed store to look he came back with 8 chicks lol. A few days later he had to go back for something and brought home 2 more! Unfortunately the next day our dog got one (knocked over my son as he was about to put his favorite back in the brooder, very traumatic for him), so he took our son to pick out a new one and came home with 2. So we have 11 chicks, about 3-4 weeks old now. 1 australorp, 2 black sexlink, 2 buff Orpington, 2 white leghorn, 2 Rhode Island Red, and 2 Easter eggers.

I had no idea how fast chicks grow! They are quickly getting too big for our brooder so we are trying to decide on buying or making a coop, probably buying because of convenience lol. Hopefully we'll have that soon so when the weather warms up next week we can get it up.

I've been reading here and other sites and already have learned a ton. And luckily we have neighbors with chickens and my aunt to ask for advice. I'm excited to be starting this adventure!

Nice to meet you Kara, Welcome to the Backyard chickens flock. Sadly pet dogs and cats are responsible for many chicken deaths. I feel badly for your son and the chick.

Hi Kara and welcome to our community. From what i have read here on BYC, I'd think that you would find it extremely difficult to buy a pre-fab coop that will comfortably accommodate 11 adult birds. Maybe getting a pre-fab shed would be an option. Anyway, check out the Coops Section (one of the brown tabs at the top of the page) and see if you can get any inspiration. It may also be an idea to drop by your state thread and ask what specific features other members consider essential for your local climate -

Thanks! Yes, that is the biggest problem, coops pre-built for that many are so expensive! I know we could build one ourselves for much cheaper, but the problem is time. I just had baby #8 and my husband doesn't get home until 7 during the week so only has the weekends for any yard and home projects. I've been looking on our local classifieds and bst groups for coops or sheds or anything but not much that works for that many birds. Cost will probably win out and we will build lol.

You might want to consider converting a shed which might be quicker and easier than building a coop from scratch. If you pop ‘converting a shed’ into the search option you will see that there are multiple threads on the subject.

I hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

If you would like to share pictures and stories of your flock, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out

Thank you, it really was traumatic for him and us (hearing his heart-wrenching screaming and knowing something bad had happened). He has become very protective of them now and is good at making sure the younger kids don't open the brooder. His new chick is the only one with a name so far- Jane. He'll be heartbroken if it turns out to be a rooster (no roosters allowed here).
