Hi new small flock owner

ROOS NEED LOVE TOO! SQUAWK!

Ok all the responses to Dixie being a Dixon aka Rooster are absolutely correct. 😁👏. Starting to crow this week we found a great home for Alphie a local man and his family with 5 acres and 30 hens. He is the only rooster for the flock 👌. We will try and keep both Roosters remaining Happy and Dix. But concerned because we’re now left with only 3 RIR hens the same age of 13 weeks. We have 4 more hens that are 7.5 weeks we’re waiting for them to be the same size to integrate them. Then there will be 7 hens but with a 5 week age difference.
We want to replace the 3 EE we lost as Roosters in 2 week (delay due to vacation). Eventually will give us 10 hens with 2 Roosters will this be OK? Or will the 2 Roosters over use the hens? I keep reading each Rooster needs 8-10 hens per? Advice please? We’re not prepared to get more at this time. Thank you 😊

Will the Roosters by separating them lose their pecking order? I’ve read where (hopefully) Happy and Dix since they were raised together since chicks, the order has already been determined. Happy is definitely the Alpha Rooster and Dix the Beta. So far they test each other and dance around, fluff their feathers, but Dix retreats. I’ve only seen Happy peck at Dix a couple of times ever. I’m hoping they will continue to coexist without issues. But I’m an optimist and obviously very new. 🤷‍♀️😊.

I fear 2 cockbirds would result in overbreeding of your girls. I’ve had 3 month old brothers fight they were both almost dead. I’ve had others where things have not been so brutal (though I always got rid of additional cockbirds)

I’m so sad. I love both the Roosters but the last couple of days Happy who has been the most docile friendliest since day one Ergo the name Happy Feet is becoming more and more aggressive. He ran up to me and I thought he wanted his usual attention and snack when I reached down he bit me!!! Shocked the crap out of me 😲. He then started pecking at my boots, and circling me. After the surprise I giggled and new he was challenging me. I snatched him up quickly and carried him around for about 5 mins and sat with him while I had my coffee ☕ for another 10 mins until he became completely relaxed. just to remind him, I respect his dominance, but I’m still the head B***h in charge, lovingly of course. No More problem with him and biting. But he lets me know when I walk into the run, It’s his territory. He’s also picking on Dix more too 😞. Nothing violent yet. But I think you’re right about 2 roosters. I’m so very very torn... thank you for the advice.

I recently had to sell one of my roosters. The junior and senior were not related and senior was a year older. Junior always ran when senior went after him. One day, Junior jumped senior while senior was napping and bloodied him up good.

Junior took a heck of a beating that day. I could never put them together after that as the fight would start immediately.

This is not something you want to see. You need to pick the better bird and rehome the other.
