(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
-- Nope, although I took an almost 10 year break from chickens. My first flock since then is just over a year old. A lot of things feel new
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
-- 17
(3) What breeds do you have?
-- 6 Rhode Island Red ladies, 10 Ameraucana ladies, 1 Ameraucana rooster (biggest wimp of a rooster I've ever had but he's handsome and friendly toward me so I won't complain), and 1 mystery hen.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
-- By no means am I perfect with raising them and a lot gets jiggered however, these chickens are LOVED and that is my favorite part. Their big personalities are adorable, even when they're being a pain in the butt and causing mayhem or inciting extra surprise expenses. They're friendly as heck -- even my rooster. They're fun in their own right but getting to eat their eggs after interacting with them and knowing they're just living their goofiest best lives make the eggs that much more rewarding.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
-- I love exploring the mountains preferrably on horseback whenever I get the chance, gardening (am still trying to figure out how to incorporate more chicken time in the garden), archery, and... uh... not much time for more hobbies so I'll leave that there
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
-- We've got a teenage son who the chickens love, too many dogs, a tarantula, and a pair of parakeets. I work a desk job -- boooo.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
-- I've been lurking BYC since I started getting ready for chickens a year and a half ago. I finally joined because I decided I need to pick some of y'alls brains about some big upcoming chicken projects -- lessons learned on last year's poor coop and run design and also dealing with some potential medical issues. Will probably make another post on these soon after checking out some existing threads
