Hi. I'm Stacey. My daughters (6 year old twins) and I just started our first flock in March. Things have been going well but I'm starting to have questions and need to ask specific questions rather than just skimming others' posts.

So I finally decided to jump in and register here rather than lurking.

We've got 18 6 week old chickens and roos - a mixed bag of barred rocks, sapphire gems, and wyandottes.

I also have six ducks. Three 3 week old American Pekins, two 6 week old Khakis, and an older Khaki who was rehomed from my aunt's duck flock, who were picking on him. I'm not sure his age but he's definitely an older gentleman.

I'm super attached, super excited, and really in love with this new element of my lifestyle. I've been longing for country living and a backyard flock for years and I've finally managed to make both come true..

Yes, it's definitely a big ol' handful of chicks and ducks. Basically, I have had a reputation as a wannabe chicken mom for a while, while living in the city, and a few people around who had birds in need of rehoming reached out once I moved last fall and got my original group this spring, so we grew about a third of our size just by taking in new faces. But I'm excited to be able to do it. We've got just under two acres that's all theirs, so I'm thrilled to be able to offer sanctuary to those in need as often and as much as I can without going over my carrying capacity.

I'm shocked that for such a large flock, not even all brooded together, there have been zero incidents of aggression of pecking. Not even chick-on-duck. I fully expected it, and had a contingency plan of an extra outbuilding for duck housing if separation became necessary. But so far we've been good!

Yes, to answer BlueBaby's comment, I have a few Amish families around me who've offered an ongoing barter system for roos in exchange for goods and services, which suits me just fine. Though, as we're free-ranging, I wouldn't mind keeping one roo or so as a hawk alarm.

I'm excited to have a whole group of chicken people to talk to and hear stories from!
