Hey Everyone! My name is Renee, I live in Connecticut in the US and I am new to raising chickens. If you’re in CT LMK! I started this venture because of a dog (see photo), Pepe, that I rescued. He was a rescue from the North Carolina hurricanes/flooding. Every dog food over the counter either made him get a rash or upset his stomach. I had him tested and I found out he’s allergic to every protein except chicken eggs. So I started making both my dogs food; if you see the amount of eggs I go through in a week…it’s amazing. I thought I could probably get better quality eggs if I raised chickens, and why not? My job switched us to permanently working from home, so I have a perfect situation.
In May, one of my friends was moving to Florida and gave me his small coop in chicken run and some of his supplies and that was the start of my flock. I ended up getting three birds to start, they were already six weeks old. But I also wanted additional ones so I picked up four baby chicks. I’m at the point where I’ve integrated two of the chicks and I’m still integrating two more. I have a barred rock named Rockquel, a brown laced Wyandotte named Winnie, A leghorn obviously named foghorn leghorn aka Foggy, two Polish, one I named Polina and one Nancalita, one Buff Orphington named Ophelia-Carmela and an Easter Egger named Esther or aka Downeaster.
I have learned so much on many different websites and books. But I will be posting a question out to you guys. I’m also going to be building a larger coop that is more feasible for cleaning with my bad back. I am excited to do that in a few weeks!!! Yes I will post photos.
As for me personally, I have two grown children, one who lives at home. She’s a supervisor at a Starbucks going to school full-time and my son is an EMT and he lives outside the house. I love animals. i have always done a lot of rescue work. I have two dogs, three cats, two bunnies, seven chickens and one chinchilla, oh yes and some fish. My friends call me Mrs Doolittle because i always have some animal come in my yard or if I am out I see wild animals in the oddest of places.
In my spare time I am a musician, I play out locally in a couple of bands here in Connecticut, and I love doing projects. I always take on big projects for home-improvement or yard landscaping improvement. I decided to join this site because every time I search for something chicken related it pops up, so here I am!
