As with just about anything, ask 10 people and you get 11 different answers, lol. There are very few questions about chicken keeping where there is just one right answer. ....the key is taking in the information, choosing what parts seem they would work for you and your flock, trying that and yhen, if need be, starting over again with another way. I used to breed & show cockers in the late 60's to 1980. My last few lived to 14 years of age and 1 made it to 14.5 No matter how long a dog lives, they always pass away too soon.
