hi, my name is Amy and I am new to chickens. We got interested through my oldest son being in Clover Kids (4H). Chickens is a project they can do and so we started researching. We have an old shed in our backyard my husband is going to fix up for our chickens with the help of a friend that is a carpenter. We got our first chicks 5 weeks ago and they were Rhode Island Reds (4 of them). My husband who had chickens when he was little soon told me I should have gotten more just in case so we didn't end up with too few. We were already addicted and went and got a pair of black sex links. A few weeks later I was buying feed and saw such cute Sicilian Buttercups that I could resist. I ended up with a pair of them and a pair of Barred Plymouth Rocks. Now we have to decide which chick is going to go to fair!! I am also raising 2 more Reds and 2 more Black Sex Links for a friend who has chickens. We are just taking care of them till they are big enough to introduce to her flock. It will be hard to see them go!!
We live in Nebraska. We have two sons at the ages of 6 and 4.
My black sex links, who are about 5 weeks old appear "oily". Is this normal or should I be concerned?
