I am new to chickens, got my first chicks that are now about 5 months old, I can't wait for them to begin to lay! I am not the eccentric type but I have really grown to love my chickens and they DO have their own personalities! Really they do! Was surprised that they actually respond to affection. I have problems with eating store bought eggs (stomach) and found that natural range fed eggs I can eat! So this is why I invested in my own flock of 4. We are in the city but do have hawks so unfortunately they need to stay caged:-( I am seeking information on "caged chickens" and how I can best match their captivity verses free roaming chickens. Any advice would be welcome:-)

I'm not sure what you mean by caged but, you can make them a secure fenced area with top (to keep hawks away) and still let the chickens enjoy the outdoors. If they have never ranged free in a wide area they won't miss it.

Thank you drumstick:-) Oh no they are not in a cage like a rabbit cage lol they are in a dog run 6x6 with wire over the top and a hen house inside, there are 3 layers of perches.

Welcome to BYC. Being in the city is no guarantee that you may not be faced with coyotes, fox, raccoons and even bobcats not to mention dogs. Monitored free ranging may be best in your situation.
