I have a small farm and several chickens - I am a "newbie" to chickens and to this forum. I got my chickens when they were just-hatched from my neighbor who is a farmer. Now they are coming-one year old. I am really enjoying my chickens. Hope to make some new friends here and learn more about my chickens.

ok, hope this works - here are some of my chickens - they are "unknown breed" - mixed breed probably leghorn and rhode island red (mixed), and barred rock? The farmer that gave them to me just put a bunch of eggs in the incubator, and voila - chickens. Not purebred, for sure. Most do lay brown eggs though.

the chickens pecking around on the farm - I made the fencing especially for them - it's raised 6" or so, so they can run under it to get away from dogs (in case one gets after them, though I keep a close eye).

I don't know what kind any of my chickens are. The farmer I got them from has many chickens, all running around together - many roosters of all different colors and sizes, and hens the same. So ????? they are supposedly mixed breed - even the plymouth rocks might be mixed. I have no idea about the whites - I just assumed they were leghorn mixes. They do have black spots (small ones) here and there on their feathers. The dark rooster in the far left of the picture appears to be a rhode island red - but he came with the same lot of chicks, so he is probably not purebred either. He's very pretty though. I have two dark red hens (not in the picture) and then the lighter tan ones. I'd love to know what kind they are - just for curiosity - but right now I'll just call them mutts. Most lay brown eggs.

Welcome and your chickens are too cute! Its funny because not everyone thinks they are but I think they are adorable. I'm an animal fanatic like that. ha. I have a cat, a lovebird, and my 10 baby chicks now. I just got them a few days ago and can't wait till they get bigger. Mine are probably mixed too by the way. I just went to the hardware store and they had a sign that said "assorted pullets, $2.09 each" So I got 10 and they are so much fun. The unfun part is going to be setting up their coop. I have to pull out the power tools and the wallet for this one. ha. I knew what I was getting into when I got them though.

So the picture of your house is cute. It looks peaceful. I live in the middle of town but have huge yard that i'm not using so I figured i'd let the chickens have it. ha. So glad you joined this forum, it seems to be very useful whenever you have any questions because several people give you ideas and thoughts and tell you how its done. Its great.
