I decided to introduce myself since I am new and hopeful to meet and talk to other chicken enthusiasts! I have a feeling I’m in the right place to do that.
So without further adieu....
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
- I am brand new! We ordered our first chickens back in April, but they did not arrive to us until July. We swore four would be plenty.... But we now have 11. Chicken math is real.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
- Eleven beautiful pullets - seven and nine weeks old.
(3) What breeds do you have?
- Plymouth Barred Rocks, Rhode Island Reds, Easter Eggers, Cuckoo Marans, and a mystery bird who I just posted about looking for breeed suggestions/ideas!
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
- I absolutely love their personalities. We got into chickens for the eggs but I am an avid animal-lover and have been all my life. I have always wanted a farm and chickens are our first step toward one day building a homestead. I find them to be so fascinating, though! I love to take a book out to their yard and sit in there and listen to them and watch them. They have the cutest and funniest little personalities and they have brought so much joy to our family.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
- Reading, writing, and loving on my family.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
- I am a stay-at-home, homeschooling mama to a five year old boy and two year old girl. I am married to an amazing law enforcement officer. And I am now chicken obsessed just like the rest of you.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
- Google! I have been scouring the internet trying to figure out what breed of chicken my nine week old pullet, Olive, is, and found several listings from this site. So happy to be here!
And just for fun... I know we aren’t supposed to have “favorites,” but my spunky little Easter Egger girl (Edith) makes me laugh every single day. I just have to share her!
